I think the problem may have been related to all the Fedora updates
that have been installed since the last time I logged in.
When I logged out and logged back in I found that I was now

As a result of a recent update, I now see authentication requests for
the root password whenever:
a) the software update daemon wakes up to check for updates (or to
install what it finds)
b) when I plug in a USB mass storage device
How can this be turned off again ?

Running F25 I'm seeing (IMHO) some outrageous memory consumption
Here's what top showed (just before the system hung up completely).
ksmserver taking 13Gig of memory !
pulseaudio taking almost 4Gig !
Wow.
No wonder my system hung.
