I wouldn't say that upgrading is unreliable in Windows - a clean
install is always a better option, and technically safer, but
upgrading is also quite reliable.

You need to install the VirtualBox additions - it's in one of the
menus at the top of the screen whilst you're running the VM. It mounts
a disk inside the VM which will install all o the necessary drivers.

The Gadget Show recently ran a review of many routers. IIRC the D-Link
DIR-825 and the Sitecom brand came out very well. The Sitecom Gaming
Router was the quickest to set up as well. Check the show's site out
