The Gadget Show recently ran a review of many routers. IIRC the D-Link DIR-825 and the Sitecom brand came out very well. The Sitecom Gaming Router was the quickest to set up as well. Check the show's site out for more detailed info.
The operating system shouldn't make a difference if it's via ethernet.
