I guess you are using the Classic desktop. It is in Unity that the
problem arises.
have the firefox menu within firefox rather than
in the top bar, which is presumably why the right click still works.
Have you told Unity not to put the app menus in the top bar somehow?

interface instead of Unity? Also try switching off special effects.

This won't change - uname is used in scripts that need to kno
t it is running on a
different type of hardware, which it is not, it is just that the 64
bit OS uses the extensions whereas the 32 bit does not.

in standby, but it is not. The problem is that something (possibly a
hardware fault) is causing it to think it is in standby when it is
not.

I think that is quite a different problem, hanging during shutdown.
My machine does a full normal shutdown, but then leaves the standby
light flashing.
