I am not sure if this helps, but maybe it works with the radeon driver, or
radeonhd driver, and if that is the case we already know, that it's a bug in
fglrx.
If you use Intrepid the radeonhd version will be too old, so you would have to

It is very important that the fglrx driver (the proprietary one from amd/ati)
is removed from the system, where an open driver should work. Also it can be
important to shut down you computer and start it again if you want to use a
free driver, because fglrx changes some registers, which get only

I think that this has to do with the video driver. The new graph uses cairo (?)
and this must be rendered. This has to do the graphic card, but it the driver
does not support this, the CPU must do this, which results in a very heavy CPU

You have to use the Ubuntu way (Hardware Drivers window) *or* the way by
downloading the driver from the ati internet page. I suggest to try the
Ubuntu way. Does removing fglrx (how to do that says google or ask here)
and installing it again (in the Ubuntu way) help?

Reinstall Ubuntu from a CD and while doing that delete the whole hard disc
drive (But everything is gone after that). Be sure to get the Ubuntu CD from an
independent source.
Be sure to use really save passwords.
