I think that this has to do with the video driver. The new graph uses cairo (?) and this must be rendered. This has to do the graphic card, but it the driver does not support this, the CPU must do this, which results in a very heavy CPU usage. That a new nvidia driver could fix this problem shows, that the graphics driver has to do with it.
