It is very important that the fglrx driver (the proprietary one from amd/ati) 
is removed from the system, where an open driver should work. Also it can be 
important to shut down you computer and start it again if you want to use a 
free driver, because fglrx changes some registers, which get only set back by a 
new cold start.
You can delete the xorg.conf and then restart, then the system should create a 
new one, and in that file you can change the driver to radeonhd. 

You can look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.log  to see which driver is used. 
Or start System log, this is in System -> Administration -> System Log (in 
Gnome) and look there at the file.

But sorry, if it doesn't work with an open driver either I have not
ideas any more, too. :(
