My Toshiba U305 has really better behaviour with last released alsa
(1.0.16), although still there is a lot of noise and offset on recording
and a quite low volume level on playback compared to the Other OS.

I have a very similar problem. After a bit of digging I found an entry
for 127.0.1.1 (notice: .1.1, not .0.1) in my /etc/hosts. I commented it
and now the gnome starts fast like in Feisty.
But: why that entry is needed? localhost is on 127.0.0.1, no? Since
1986, no :-)?

OK, I was wrong. It did not fix the first login for me, just the second
and following one. On the first login after boot, entering in gnome is

For me it is completely reproducible. Maybe it's and HAL issue, but the
fact is, if I exit from OO quicklauncher, then shutdown/logout works as
expected.

Another point. I discovered how that to make my mics work again (see
bug#579557 with more data): removing $HOME/.pulse directory and
rebootin
Me too. If you try to shutdown with the power button, or the poweroff
applet, a window flashes during a couple of seconds saying that some
openoffice program cannot be closed. Than it disappears and nothing
happens.
Notice that the aforementioned windows used to appear in Karmic, too,
but in that
'couple of things: I catched an oops when reenabling the WiFi con fn-F2.
Will attach the oops to this entry.
As an additional hint, if you do "sudo rmmod ath9k ; sudo modprobe
ath9k" normally (almost everytime) the wifi connection starts again.
I did not test ethernet (cable) connection.
