1) The headphones are plugged into the computer's headphone out jack; I
couldn't find a headphone jack on the monitor.
2) The upgrade from the 6.5-based kernel to the 6.8 kernel was done

I am happy to say that I have tried again to update microcode, and this time no
issues occurred.
As suggested on github, maybe a corrupted initramfs, or something I can't
explain.

Yes, the problem remains. I'll add that the strace outputs of "vmplayer"
and "sudo vmplayer" are identical (though I don't think that's
particularly interesting, given that /usr/bin/vmware is just a shell
script).
