I sometimes have this issue too. But it only seems to happen when I'm using
Virtualbox and copying 'n pasting between my Desktop and the Virtualbox
instance.
When it occurs (not always) it doesn't care what I try. It keeps pasting 'ŸŸ'.
I have to restart gnome to stop it from happening.

backlight went out. But a fraction of a second later, it wen back on.
The fix of mackkie worked for me too.
