I sometimes have this issue too. But it only seems to happen when I'm using Virtualbox and copying 'n pasting between my Desktop and the Virtualbox instance. When it occurs (not always) it doesn't care what I try. It keeps pasting 'ŸŸ'. I have to restart gnome to stop it from happening. -- Gu

is a big gap difference. The Gmail icon on the desktop takes about a couple of seconds to show the mail. It is amazing how Google is pushing. I still have 8.04 installed as a second OS, but for the time being I have no better option that Chrome and Gmail in WindowsXP. I am grateful for your help.
