My solution under Intrepid:
modified /boot/grub/menu.lst
added vga=0x0323 to defoptions
modified /etc/usplash.conf:
xres=1024 was: 1440
yres=768was: 900
Note: vga=0x0365 did not work even though my default display is
1440x900. During reboot this produced a screen of vga mode options for

I did some checking on a fresh install of Intrepid, discovered this file
with incorrect line as reported above and made the change. I don't
think it made any practical difference since I am running KDM.
In /etc/ati/authatieventsd.sh change this line:
XDM_AUTH_MASK=/var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfile

I sympathize with your frustrations. I did a clean install to Intrepid
after release date. This issue has returned to my laptop. I will be
working for net couple hours to see what hack must be done to resolve
it.

My procedure is the following:
1. plug the yellow RCA connector into tv, tv is set to Video input of connector
2. plug s-video end of cable into laptop tv-out
3. Open ATI control center
4. Set resolution to 1024x768, then apply
5. Set tv-out to clone--I do not need to apply, setting this takes aff
These are the only three apps affected that I can find. I believe they
are all Gnome-related. They crash when any menu is selected in Kubuntu-
desktop/KDE4. I also have ubuntu-desktop installed and all three work
fine in Gnome.

I would agree that the bugs are very similar; however, I use Firefox in
KDE4 and it works very good. Also Open Office works very good as
well.but I am using OpenOffice3 from the PPA.
One of the things I do when I install kubuntu-desktop is go back and
install kde and all the kde styles/themes
Some more notes on this. I am reading posts (dated within last two
weeks) in the (K)Ubuntu forums that fglrx version 8.54.3 is not
compatible with xorg 7.4. Funny, as I have both installed and do
receive proper output on fglrxinfo command. There is an expectation
that ATI is set to release a dri

I have a submit button named "reset" that when clicked, the server

ok, maybe I was dreaming, seems to be working properly now. I did not
do any restarts of the system since filing the bug report. If I have no

I am using Kubuntu Gutsy, had this issue off and on for two versions or so, it
only seemed to occur when I downloaded the latest ATI drivers, vice using from
repository.
I physically verified the new path existed before replacing the XDM_AUTH_MASK
line. After replacement my issue was solved.
looks like the issue has returned with fglrx 8.40.4...I am using an ATI
Xpress 200M. I followed instructions to download the file and it seems
to have made the issue worse. I managed to get the warning flags about
using it in software GL mode...when it finally came up it had no map of
the earth.
I have had this bug for a long time in Feisty and now in
Gutsyinstead of a black screen I received verticle colored lines
filling the whole screen.
I have HP dv8000 with AMD with ATI X200M
The bug only exists when I use fglrx drivers.
I employed the solution of Kai (way above: radeonfb, etc)

I added irqpoll by itself, then irqpoll with noapic, then irqpoll with
nolapic. irqpoll by itself did not affect any changes. adding it with
nopaic caused system stop at very beginning of boot process. Same thing
with nolapic, but a different error. I am researching flashing the

Woohoo! This is not the only major fix I am hearing about with Feisty.
I havent loaded Feisty yet, waiting for stable release..although my adept
updater keeps prompting me to.

My network manager comes up ok; however, it only comes online after

1. At the start it listed 1856 packages to upgrade.
2. On package #2 I turned off my wireless LAN
3. No error messages...nor did the tool produce any indicators of loss of
