Public bug reported:
Supermicro 7044 server
X6DHT-G motherboard, dual 3Ghz Xeon64, HT on
latest BIOS (v2 1/26/06)
Installed 6.06 64bit onto Areca sata RAID and everything installed fine.
After completion, reboot into system. X fails to load (no error) and
text login appears. apt-get update segfa
Correction - 2.6.15-7 source did not produce workable kernel, vanilla
2.6.17 + mm3 patch (for Areca driver) does.

Yes, the installer works just fine. This is after a fresh install. No
tweaks have been done. Downloaded the Alt Install 64bit CD ISO. Boot
from it, run through the installer, reboot, blam. The CD is ok as I can
install AMD 64bit systems and it works great with no problems.
On first login I tr
reiserfs v3. I can try ext3. Considering though that everything works
ok afterwards with a new kernel, I don't think that's it. Feels like
compiler optimizations in gcc >= 3.4.
Once I booted the recompiled vanilla kernel, X works fine using vesa?
but since this is a samba server, I have gdm tur
Reinstalled with ext3 for root. Same behavior. I have the Nocona
Xeons, not the Duos.

Using a kernel from the other supermicro server (Hoary 2.6.10) to boot
from, I was then able to apt and compile from the vanilla source tree
(patched with mm3 to get Areca support) a 2.6.17 kernel that works fine.
I had to use gcc 3.3. Same source with 3.4 would not work. Ubuntu

So checking back in to this issue...
Installed 6.06.1 on a MSI 7125 system (64bit Nforce4 board) onto 4 port
Areca 1210 PCIe array.
Both 32 and 64bit flavors installed on array results in the same
behvaior as above. Installed onto a 40Gb IDE disk with Areca removed
entirely and no errors with ei
Reinstalled, used ext3 for root. Before rebooting after the installer,
chrooted to /target, apt'd stuff to get kernel tools, source, etc.
apt'd the xeon prebuilt package which I hadn't noticed before, might as
well try it. Also built 2.6.15.7 from ubuntu source with gcc 4.0.3.

Vanilla 2.6.15 with mm4 patch (for Areca) and gcc3.3 works, X works, apt
works.
Vanilla 2.6.15 + only Areca driver from areca.us site and gcc 3.3 works.
X works, apt works.
Vanilla 2.6.15 + only Areca driver from areca.us site and gcc 4.0.3 also
works. X works, apt works.

I figured out a way to make it work.
1) If you boot off of a different device, everything is fine. Say a
single ide/sata OS disk with Areca /data volume. But then you don't
have a RAID backed OS disk... Could setup a MD RAID 1 OS I guess. But
then you need even more disks.
2) Using the Arec
