Using a kernel from the other supermicro server (Hoary 2.6.10) to boot from, I was then able to apt and compile from the vanilla source tree (patched with mm3 to get Areca support) a 2.6.17 kernel that works fine. I had to use gcc 3.3. Same source with 3.4 would not work. Ubuntu 2.6.15-7 source did not get me a bootable kernel, but I don't recall if I compiled with 4.0, 3.4 or 3.3. I have installled this box numerous times and numerous variants unfortunately.
Recompiling the booted 2.6.10 kernel from source did not recompile nicely. This makes me think that it's a gcc >= 3.4 problem. I yanked the whole source tree from the working Hoary box and tried to recompile it with no changes to the config since I know that it will compile on Hoary/3.3. I'll try ubuntu source package compile with 3.3 on Monday 7/10.
