I don't know of any follow-ups on or solutions for this bug. There is,
however, a workaround: The desktop CD works just fine (and you can of
course manually add the user using a live cd). I know the live-CD is not
suitable for all kinds of installations, but at least it works...

Okay, I think there's a fundamental communication problem here:
I installed Jaunty from the alternate CD and found I couldn't log in. I
couldn't even boot to a shell, so I fired up the old Hardy Live-CD which
allowed me to look at the problem on my internal hard drive which was

package problems (something installed the Nvidia driver package on my system

"Start GDM" only tells me that GDM is already running. "restart gdm"
works and brings me to the login screen. But I only tried that once on
tty2 (got tty1 to lock up by running "startx") as I only just ran into
the bug when booting the system a few minutes ago after yesterday's

The main "problem" here is that fglrx doesn't want to install on a kernel newer
than 2.6.32. However we can't expect the Ubuntu devs to support other kernels
than the ones shipping with Ubuntu.
I would suggest you to file bugreports with the problems you have using fglrx
on the official 2.6.32-k

work but it's more or less ugly and fixing the problem where it _really_ lies

Actually I was a bit too harsh above - it's not really a udev bug, if I
read the thread on linux-usb correctly it is actually a bug in hdparm
but until that gets fixed I vote for disabling the mentioned udev rule
alltogether which would make it a udev bug too ;)

Okay, it's me again, we DO have the same bug. I think it's either a
hardware or a driver error regarding the usb enclosure detected as
"05e3:0718 Genesys Logic, Inc. ". I have two of these and both fail to
be mounted in lucid (on two different machines, one imac and a Lenovo

The problem was that wine's registry entries for DVDprofiler from 32
-bit-Karmic didn't work in 64bit Lucid. Resettign Wine's registry and
config fixed this bug for me.
