Okay, sorry, the bad X-performance was due to DRI being disabled due to some package problems (something installed the Nvidia driver package on my system which broke my ATI DRI). Now that I've found the source of the problem this is gone. As this problem is resolved I don't attach any logs right now as they're not needed for this specific wishlist-bug. As the patch linked above still sounds like a great feature to have (speed is never a bad thing) I'll leave this bug open and request having it marked with wishlist-importance.
