No, looks like this is not simply an update problem.
I tried this kernel (with restricted modules installable and installed):
Linux chris-laptop 2.6.26-1-generic #1 SMP Fri Jun 13 13:22:43 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
I still don't have any sound (exception GDM intro, but no gnome intro
after login).

I would like to confirm this bug too. I first experienced it when I
upgraded to Hardy (I updated to Intrepid and it is still buggy).
I think it is related to the flash plugin. I noticed that I have
playback problems in rhythmbox only when Firefox is running (not all the

This is very easy to reproduce here :
1. Launch firefox
2. Play a song in rhythmbox
3. Pause the song in rhythmbox
4. Go to youtube and play a video
5. Pause the video on youtube
6. Resume the song playback in rhythmbox <- this fails and you need to kill
rhythmbox.

I'm attaching rhythmbox debug output.
Firefox is running and I played a youtube video. Then I ran rhythmbox in
debug mode and tried to play a song. It failed and I had to kill it. I
hope this output can be of some help.

Wow, I have just installed libflashsupport package and it looks like it
is working fine now.
So it is related to flash and pulseaudio after all.
I got the idea from the ubuntu french forum where users are getting the
same bug: http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=220138

Public bug reported:
I am using a DELL XPS M1330 Laptop with latest Hardy and I first

still Beta).
When my laptop is using battery power (not plugged in), it happens that
Xorg fails to launch. The problem does not happen everyt

I don't know if it is related but just before that, I tried to suspend
the laptop but it failed (suspend is far from reliable here). Therefore,
I had to press the power button for 5 seconds to switch it off. Then I
unplugged the power cable and I booted the laptop again -> Got the
error.
