Still no movement on this bug. :-(
I have added blkid and its lib to the tags, as blkid also fails to list
/dev/sda5 (even after the above work-around to manually create the
symlink) but it does list all other partitions.
Not sure if blkid is the source of the problem, if that is used by
update-

I now have 8.04 LTS plus latest updates on two machines. One still had the
problem but the other didn't. With a little testing, I have identified

from /~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32.12.3-lucid boots cleanly on a D505,

To confirm, recovery mode does boot into the CLI and the failure occurs,

I had no further issues with this release after applying the mainline
kernel, as per my #8 update:

Since then, I have my D505 laptops running 11.4 and 11.10 with no

I also encountered this on my second fresh Quantal installation, taken
from the Monday 20 Aug night's 'current' build, affecting a Compaq
NC6320 laptop. My main installation on a desktop, running with daily
updates since ~Alpha-2, shows no such issues.

Thank you for those links - I was not aware that pre-compiled upstream
kernels were available.
I have tried twice to trigger the bug using the method above, however no
crashes were observed which is great news.

Seeing the same here, regardless of running compiz. In fact, every full
screen Flash crashes (cannot Esq to quit; need to ctrl-alt-F2 and kill
