Still no movement on this bug. :-( I have added blkid and its lib to the tags, as blkid also fails to list /dev/sda5 (even after the above work-around to manually create the symlink) but it does list all other partitions.
Not sure if blkid is the source of the problem, if that is used by update-initramfs and update-grub.
