Hi Michael I now have 8.04 LTS plus latest updates on two machines. One still had the problem but the other didn't. With a little testing, I have identified there is NO problem on both machines with the following setting:
Appearance Preferences - Visual Effects - None To experience the problem requires setting: Appearance Preferences - Visual Effects - Normal or Appearance Preferences - Visual Effects - Extra Both PCs are running the latest apt-get Nvidia OEM driver 169.12 and the latest 2.6.24-18-generic kernel. The blank screen seen after logout from the guest account is now white and recovery is via ctrl_alt_bkspace which kills the original login session also, so is not a work-around. At least no re-boot is required.
