Hi Rolf,

I guessed that my problems may have come from poor handling of the
standard (update-manager -d) upgrade to Karmic from Jaunty, rather than
a fresh install, so I decided to re-install Karmic 2 days ago from the
nightly Alternate build, using the CLI 'Expert Install' option, (as
other others failed, as did installing from Live/Desktop; all methods
using a USB key built with UNetBootin).

Anyway, the reinstall was to the same partition (Ext4 this time), while
maintaining XP on the first partition and it all went smoothly, as far
as recognising the root partition goes. I guess this ticket can be
closed now, as I no longer have that problem, so cannot troubleshoot it
further. I also did an upgrade from Jaunty to Alpha2 on another laptop a
few weeks ago, which had a similar dual-boot, partitioned build and that
also had no problems, so this may have been a one-off bug.

(BTW, With the fresh install, I am now seeing some bugs that others have
reported, which I did not get earlier by following the standard upgrade
route.)

Cheers
Alistair
