I have the same problem, but I DO NOT use Fast User Switch applet at all. I
also have two accounts: victor and test, and the difference between them is
that one works with Compiz-Fusion, while another uses Metacity.

Well, it looks like a touchpad problem. I can't tell if the touchpad
has crapped out, or gotten wet--any spilled drinks? Sometimes the
ribbon cable to the touchpad gets loose.
Grab yourself a USB mouse and plug that in and see if you can regain
control. Try turning off the touchpad in BIOS.

IMHO, the default disk for writing the boot loader should be the disk
that you are installing to. Can you please check if this is the case
with Hardy?
