I've forwarded the bug upstream:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=418507
** Changed in: gstreamer0.10 (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: totem => gstreamer0.10
Status: Needs Info => Confirmed
** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #418507

I can confirm the same behaviour on my machine (AMD 64 feisty herd 5). No
problem if I use the i386 CD.
BTW, perhaps it helps, in answer to key presses the relevant control codes are
shown (for instance Enter=^M etc.).

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: lftp
Judging from the stack trace, this bug is distinct from #75304 and
#82394.
Running Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, lftp 3.4.0-1, i386.
To reproduce:
$ lftp http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/1.0.8
lftp releases.mozilla.org:/pub/mozilla.org/
When I click on USB mounted icon, I see menu with two lines:
Open UGLY
Eject UGLY
UGLY is just a description for characters that I cannot write here,
about 6 characters including 3 questionmarks. Both lines have the same
UGLY string.
It is not possible to create screenshot of the situation.
--
I removed my USB key and put it back to USB slot. It was mounted again
but "ugly" name changed, it is only "*" now. It points to some
problem with a pointer, random string is placed to name position...

Not according to my initial intentions, due to the principle of

throwing core dumps around, FWIW).
However, thinking about it again apport *could* write cor

Thanks for your information manu.
I have a very similar xorg.conf that uses the trident driver like the one
posted by manu, and X more-or-less works with some glitches mentioned in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=301082
I may try the vga=791 option to see if that fixes the glitches.
