No, on the network itself is no firewall between the Windows and the
Ubuntu PC. And for all tests I also switched off my personal firewall on

Hi I can confirm that it is the Xine Engine that is broken in this case.
Building Debs via Alien of daily (unofficial) Suse RPMs of both
libxine1-1.1.4-061204 and the respective w32codec-0.52-1.i386 package
resolves the problem.

It is not a bug, it is a feature. There is no need to run the view part
as root, only the installation part requires root privileges.
Ad 2:
Please run update-manager in a Terminal as normal user. Perhaps you will
get some more information in the Terminal.

the feisty version doesn't appear to be fixed yet, please upload a fix
to feisty first.
I'm also a little bit concerned to replace the upstream tarball for
edgy. I've been looking at jdong's source package, but FWIW this fix
won't work, since we cannot have an upstream tarball with the same
v
Jakub always suggests to not use svg icons for small resolutions. So I
would suggest not to only add a SVG version, but also one for 22x22.
There is a Tango one, but the used metaphor doesn't seem to attract
user's attention enough.

I have also theses artefacts.
But I consider more important the initial problem, which is "progress bar
invisible": I have this problem and this is a basic facility which is really
needed.
