I am having a similar problem, that I would like to see taken care of.
I have the same chipset, but I am able to play audio just fine in ALSA.
The real issue for me is that OSS does not work.

Xorg.0.log shows that Xorg loads them fine. Hence,

i get the same error when i attempt to import using dv type2 via
firewire, however it imports OK using 1394raw.
using dapper, and standard version.
i386, amd cpu.

The init script is for human use only anyway. avahi-daemon is started by
dbus, not by the init script.

Oh, please note that this affects my built-in writer on
/sys/class/scsi_device/1\:0\:0\:0/
I think the main problem is when using SATA hard drives.
