Hi. I am using Ubuntu 9.04 and I have the same problem. The laptop model is Acer TravelMate 2410. I tried enabling the drivers from Atheros in the Hardware Drivers appication but it doesn't fix the problem. In my room the signal is about 70% and as I go to the kitchen, which is about 3 to 4 meters

I also noticed the strange signal behaviour and sudden disconnects. I compared the strength of several accesspoints nearby and it looks like madwifi or network manager reverses the signal strength. Under Windows I usually have nearly 100% and under Ubuntu nearly 0%, and disconnects when it hits 0%.

The low signal reading is actually a known problem with the madwifi drivers (used for the atheros chips).
