Michael, I'm afraid I saw your comments only after successfully testing
the 20070118 daily live - in other words, I know have an up-to-date
system and have updates working again.
In other words, I can no longer duplicate this bug under Feisty (and was

Have you tried runing it under gdb:
$ sudo gdb --args python /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check
Do you get a traceback there?

This bug seems to be unreleated to #74773. I suspect this one is
triggered /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check. I was not able to
reproduce this here, but I would be happy if someone could provide a
more complete backtrace.

Are bug #74773 and bug #74176 related? The symptoms appear very close,
all related to python modules required for package management. If they
are the same bug, let me know and I'll set up the dupes properly
(assuming that 74176 should be the "master bug").

I just realized why it is "3 out of 4 sessions": Because the update

Now this is interesting: apt-get also crashes, and I've attached the
crash report. Despite its being a binary and not an interpreted file,
there is appears to be a common root cause:
When I run update-manager from the menu, it crashes while trying to
perform an update operation;

Marked as confirmed based on duplicates: apt-check is the command at the
root of all of these crashes (according to the crash files). What's odd
is that this happens under both Edgy and Feisty, but differently:

Thanks for your bugreport.
Can you still reproduce this problem? What happens if you open a terminal and
type:
$ sudo apt-get install -f
does that work? Or crash as well?
Thanks,
