I just realized why it is "3 out of 4 sessions": Because the update
check is a scheduled task, and doesn't start at the beginning of every
session. If a session starts after the scheduled check was supposed to
run, the crash occurs.

I can generate the crash at will by running update-manager.

The odd thing is, I had an indication earlier today than there were
updates available, but I ignored it (too many other things to do). Now I
get the crash every time I try to do anything with the updates.
