Now this is interesting: apt-get also crashes, and I've attached the
crash report. Despite its being a binary and not an interpreted file,
there is appears to be a common root cause:

When I run update-manager from the menu, it crashes while trying to
perform an update operation;

apt-check is likely doing the same thing when it crashes and generates
the python crash file; and

apt-get update crashed after downloading most (all?) updates - it looked
to me like it was trying to update the database when it died.
