I get the point that the logs are difficult to get :) One option is for
those who have upgraded their installation to edgy and are experiencing
this bug: boot with another live cd (or another installed linux if you
have dual-boot) and fish out the logs from the edgy partition.
Christian, thanks for
Scott,
Yes, i was able to change the xorg.conf on an installed system. You are right,
this problem is still with the LiveCD and we cant change this file.
Think the Vesa driver has to be fixed as it was working fine with Dapper.

I seem to have encountered the same bug when trying the 6.10 i386 live
CD. If I leave the graphics options as default then the splash screen
appears albeit with a green horizontal line near the middle. After the
progress bar reaches the end, it freezes while still inside the splash
screen.

Problem: Failure in booting in to Live Desktop 6.10.
Result: Screen Goes Black after boot phase, right as it enters the
Desktop phase. Must power off to remedy.
Steps to Reproduce:
1) boot x386 CD and DVD (I've tested both)

I presume this presume this progress you made was on an installed
system? If so, it confirms that there is a configuration error with the
default graphics driver; unfortunately, since you can't boot into
recover mode on the LiveCD, someone trying to run the LiveCD would not

I was able to make progress in this black screen issue by changing my driver
from vesa to trident. My Dell Inspiron 5160 has XGI VOLARI XP5 video card and
vesa was working fine with Dapper. But in Edgy, i shifted to Trident driver and
included the modeline from /var/log/Xorg.0.log in the /etc/X1
Note that "Safe Graphics Mode" does not work because of bug #59618.

DominikBodi: I don't think generalizing this bug to usplash is correct,
that seems to be a variation of the bug. I am experiencing the same
symptoms as the initial report regardless of if I am using splash or
not. I removed splash from the kernel line which gave me the standard

I found a workaround. I've installed a NVDIA card in the same PC and now
everything works great.
I know it is not really helpfull but I am sure that the incompatibility
is with my Intel video adaptor.

Same problem, different video adapter. I have a Intel 82845/GL/GE/PE/GV
video adapter. I tried every suggestions I found in that post and I
still can't get the GUI. Text mode works find.
Instead of the GUI I see a Black Screen.
