I have upgraded from dapper to edgy with alternate cd (no Net access) changed
to egdy in sources.list and went on apt-get dist-upgrade.
Everything went ok till i got note that my gdm wont work.
I tried dpkg-reconfigure and still same thing.
i have access to consoles from 1-7.
I'm using ATI RADEO
Ok, so when booting ubuntu with splash screen, the computer freezes up. When
booting it without the splashscreen, it looks like #22985
Two possible causes for this:
1. usplash doing bad things
2. kernel console framebuffer interfering with X.
Judging from past personal experience utilising console

I have a radoen 9600XT, AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 1 GB RAM, samsung
syncmaster 172x display and the black screen problem.
I tried sloggers suggestion, but without luck and basicly see the same
as Qua

The "X failing to start" section lists some tricks that might get you to the
console and lets you save important diagnostics data. Without having the
Xorg.0.log file it is very difficult to investigate the problem.

Well, since the problem is with the LiveCD, xorg.conf is exactly the
same as whatever's being distributed and since with this problem none of
us can get to a terminal, we can't access Xorg.0.log , and since again
its with the LiveCD, the file is wiped from memory on reboot.
