I suggest checking out https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TriagingXBugs The "X failing to start" section lists some tricks that might get you to the console and lets you save important diagnostics data. Without having the Xorg.0.log file it is very difficult to investigate the problem. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingXAutoconfiguration provides a list of important diagnostic data items necessary for investigation.
