Also worth saying is i disabled the floppy boot option in bios and moved
it to be after the HD, but that action by itself didn't make a
difference. It was only when I took the action above that it worked

I encountered the same issue, i.e. usb not being detected upon
insertion. I tested autologin both on and off and there was no
difference. Still no detection. I read something about thunar. I checked

Yes,
I do use autologin and its seems to be the root cause just like 546992.
Loggin out & in again makes it workfine, turning autologin off makes it work
right on the first login.
