Yes,
I do use autologin and its seems to be the root cause just like 546992.

Loggin out & in again makes it workfine, turning autologin off makes it work 
right on the first login.
.xsession-errors attached. 
I also looked at the .xsession when turning off autologin (i.e. when it works 
fine), the only difference is the timestamps  and the name file in /tmp the 
GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL variable points to.
In neither case does the plugging of the usb stick itslf create any extra 
messages in the .xsession-errors file.
