I seemed to have the same problem.  What seems to have fixed it for me
was playing with the boot order in bios.  I moved USB to be last in the
boot order, rebooted, and I still couldn't get any automounting of my
USB pen drives. Then I moved USB back to being after the CDROM and
before the HD as I'd had it before, rebooted and it worked as if nothing
was ever wrong.
