After upgrade from jaunty to karmic,
this bug is still present.
Need to enter "dmraid -ay" at the (initramfs) prompt in order to boot the new
karmic kernel 2.6.31-14-generic.
No problem at all booting the old jaunty 2.6.28-16-generic kernel

You don't have to. Just go to my personal package archive and download
the deb files. Then install them via "dpkg -i *.deb".
Or add "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/sjost/ubuntu intrepid main" to your

Yeah, it took a while but i have now uploaded a patched version into my
PPA.
luca: It would be cool, if you can test the updated version on your
machine. You can get it from my PPA:

You probably only need the libvolume-id0 and udev debs.

Did you want to revise your patch so it doesn't require ANY version,
instead of just accepting 2?

That's because the initramfs scripts changed from hardy to intrepid, to
make dmraid play nice with udev. See, in hardy the recognition of a
fakeraid device was made without udev and in intrepid the recognition
was made via vol_id (which is part of udev). And vol_id has this version
checking that is

I think what happend here is that VIA just released a new revision and
felt about bumping the version number.
I don't think this can be the real problem, infact I first encountered this
issue in intrepid, so I installed back ubuntu 8.04 and everything worked just
fine, then I upgraded to intrepi
I mean, we can try to ask the vendor about the new version, but i doubt
that they will answer. And since the checksum is correct and everything
is running fine here, it's kind of save to make this check a bit more
loose here.
Furthermore I was using this controller card with Fedora 8 before,
becau
That is strange. vol_id only supports version 0 and 1 because dmraid
only supports them. Version 2 is unknown and dmraid should reject it.
The vol_id code was copied from dmraid, so they should work the same.
Can you attach the output files from dmraid -rD?
Actually, now that I look more closel
What i meant with "i hope this helps." was that i hope you can make a
real patch for udev out of it. I don't know the procedure here. Who has
the rights to upload this to udev? Will this be a ubuntu fix only or can
someone inform the udev developers?
Meanwhile i tested the patch in my system and i
I found out that the version number of my raid controller is 2:
:~$ sudo dmraid -n
/dev/sda (via):
0x000 signature: 0xaa55
0x002 version_number: 2
but vol_id fails if version numbers > 1:
udev/extras/volume_id/lib/via_raid.c (line 32):
if (via->version_number > 1)
return -1;
I attache
vol_id should identify /dev/sda as ID_FS_USAGE=raid and
ID_FS_TYPE=via_raid_member. Since it doesn't, udev does not invoke
dmraid to activate it. I'm not sure why vol_id isn't picking up the
raid signature, but since that's part of udev, I'm adding udev to the
bug.

I tested with an nv raid0 and had no issue using -ubuntu12. I did
notice however, that the timeout is much shorter in intrepid, so maybe
the array takes longer than the timeout to initialize. Try just waiting
