That's because the initramfs scripts changed from hardy to intrepid, to make dmraid play nice with udev. See, in hardy the recognition of a fakeraid device was made without udev and in intrepid the recognition was made via vol_id (which is part of udev). And vol_id has this version checking that is too strict.
