I think what happend here is that VIA just released a new revision and felt about bumping the version number.
I don't think this can be the real problem, infact I first encountered this issue in intrepid, so I installed back ubuntu 8.04 and everything worked just fine, then I upgraded to intrepid and once again and the issue came out. If it was as you say I immagine that ,once the version number have been bumped, 8.04 shouldn't boot.
