I have the same problem with the driver installed by the driver manager.
However, a manual install of the same driver version (169.12) from
nVidia's website is not having the same problem.
I'm not sure what is different about the drivers from the restricted-

Hi, David.
If you're finding that the 169.12 driver solves the problem of the
aforementioned web pages causing X to crash, then I think you must be
doing something I'm not. Doesn't the Ubuntu restricted driver manager
install the 169.12 driver by default? It was the driver installed by
the drive
I've now tested several releases of the driver from nVidia's site and
they all work (including 169.12). I'm going to attempt a local build of
the restricted-modules package to see if that works as well.

173.08 is a beta driver, install at your own risk. I have found it to be more
stable than 169.12 on my system.
Release notes and download are at:

I'm confused. If I search Nvidia's site using Google, I can find driver

Driver version 173.08 from nVidia's website fixed the issue for me. I
was using the 8.04 beta for quite some time and the problem started with
the 169.12 version of the nvidia-glx-new package.

I am experiencing the same crash reported by others on this thread when
trying to view the same pages. I also have nothing in my /var/crash
directory.
Here is my info:

I've just uninstalled the Nvidia proprietary drivers I was using and now
I can view those pages in Firefox without my browser crashing. But now
I have no 3D acceleration...

I can also confirm this is happening to me as well.
I'm on Hardy, fully updated.
Using Nvidia drivers from Envy (if that matters?)
One thing I notice is that I have these same entries in my syslog:
VMBlock warning: DentryOpRevalidate: invalid args from kernel
I wonder if that's got something to do
I get same issue with the following page:
http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/4986
Firefox brings X down, even when Firefox is in safe mode.
Hardy 8.0.4 with all latest updates, Firefox 3.0b5
I can't open the page http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper either - same
result, X crashes

I can confirm the reported behavior. I even got it on a Javadoc page
with no flash content.
There is no crash report generated in /var/crash.
The X.org.0.log of the crashed X ends with:
Backtrace:

I tried to install firefox-dbg according to the web page, but there were no
firefox-3-dbg (I run firefox 3.0b5) in synaptics sources (Tell me how to
install the right dbg).
There is no new firefox crash file in /var/crash.
I use:
- flash version 9.0.124.0ubuntu2 (hardy).
- sun-java6-bin,-jdk, -j
Thank you for the bug report. Could you please try to obtain a backtrace
by following the instructions on [WWW]

the crash report from /var/crash/.
Also, please answer these questions:
Which flash package do you have installed?
Here is the /var/log/messages from just before the error above:
