Hi Robert,
This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?
Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of

There is no way compiz can be responsible for this, it is drawing the
shadows the same way on resume as it was before you suspended. Something
in X or the driver changed to make the shadow corrupted. Compiz caches
the shadows and just reuses the same texture for them for all windows so

I don't think this is fglrx specific.
I saw the same trouble using xserver-xorg-video-ati (the open source
driver). My bug report (Bug #272566) was marked as a duplicate of this
bug.

Probably a fglrx driver bug unless someone can repro the bug with -ati
or another graphics card. I recommend that you report this bug to the
ATI developers that work on that driver.

Oh and one more thing. Please try to turn of compiz and then do a
suspend/resume cycle while using metacity (this could give us a hint
about where the bug is hiding). Thanks.

I am also having this problem on Intrepid final updated to 2008-11-17.
My current fix is to load the current theme manager be it the gnome
default or emerald. I will provide any other info from my computer if
needed.

Even further experimenting confirmed that this bug has nothing to do with FLGRX
or the FOSS driver for Radeons
- I was getting the corruption using the FOSS driver before
- I just tried suspending using the FLGRX driver (after the switching fix) and
no corruption happened
- It's not the FOSS driv
After further experimenting, I discovered a sort-of fix.
Here's what I did (this worked for me but you may be able to get away with
fewer steps):
1. Disable visual effects.
2. Enable visual effects using proprietary FLGRX driver and restart.
3. Disable FLGRX but keep on using visual effects (with
I got exactly the same problem on 8.10. The shadows were full of garbage
but the screen was mostly readable. The bug is still there and must be
resolved. Also, the Ctrl-Alt-F1 trick worked for me too.

I installed Intrepid final today. Using fglrx + compiz, suspends fine
but system is messed up upon resume. You can move the mouse around and
see that, but you can't see anything else besides a mostly black screen
with some random garbage on it. Disabling visual effects makes

I'm not sure if this is still an issue because, for some unknown reason,
suspend/resume doesn't work at all for me anymore. This happens in
several distributions (ubuntu, opensuse, arch), using kernel versions
2.6.24-2.6.27
I'll try Intrepid final when it comes out, but I don't hold much hope

Hi rhollencamp,
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu?
This may be a duplicate of Bug 77736, but it may be due to a different
issue.
