I have found the same problem on a Samsung Laptop. I had some serious
problems with booting due to this.

That looks like it is exactly the same problem. I re-enabled usplash,
changed /etc/usplash.conf to 1280x800 and ran 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure
usplash'. Everything is working like a charm now.

I found a similar problem in bug 157758. It seems I missed one command: sudo
dpkg-reconfigure usplash
Can you try one more time with the correct resolution 1280x800 in
/etc/usplash.conf. Then run the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash and try a
reboot with splash enabled.

The resolution of my notebook-screen is 1280x800.
A few days ago I switched off usplash by removing 'splash' from the

Black screen and Ubuntu also starts very slowly
After removing quiet and splash in /boot/grub/menu.lst .
Ubuntu starts faster.

I just switched back to a fresh 32-bit install of gutsy which has the
exact same problem. Before i switched to 64 bit i was running an
upgraded feisty, so apparently any freshly installed gutsy has this
problem for me and it is not specific to the 64-bit version of Gutsy.
