I found a similar problem in bug 157758. It seems I missed one command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash Can you try one more time with the correct resolution 1280x800 in /etc/usplash.conf. Then run the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash and try a reboot with splash enabled.
