With nvidia driver (I've tried several versions; currently 313), I see
gnome-shell process constantly uses around 5-6% of the CPU. Moving the
cursor is about 30% CPU on gnome shell on raring. I also see occasional
lag spikes where the cursor cannot move at all, though applications
react as though
since the upgrade to precise and switch from gnome2 to gnome-shell i
have noticed also another disturbing behavior. at the work i use up to
16 workspaces in order to keep mailer, browser, programming terminals
with vim, terminals for latex and pdf viewers apart. and i logout only

gnome-shell burns more than 60% cpu all the time
Additional tests: we have tried the fglrx-updates drivers for the ATI
card but the cpu usage stayed the same at 60%. The only thing that
partially solves is uninstall of fglrx, using radeon xorg driver. Now
the cpu usage drops to 7% but is still larger than 3% on a nvidia
card...

Although I don't have 60% usage of gnome-shell it burns about 20-40% of my CPU.
This is on a Thinkpad X220 with a Core i5, 8GB Ram, Intel HD3000 GPU and an OCZ
Nocti SSD.

However there seems the fglrx driver to be
