since the upgrade to precise and switch from gnome2 to gnome-shell i
have noticed also another disturbing behavior. at the work i use up to
16 workspaces in order to keep mailer, browser, programming terminals
with vim, terminals for latex and pdf viewers apart. and i logout only
rarely, mostly when reboots are required by the updates. just looking at
top, the memory consumption of gnome-shell gradually increases and
virtual sizes well beyond 2 GB (!) are not unusual after some days...
another thing is that there is quite visible slowdown if many
windows/terminals/apps are open. opening several 10 terminals, a few
Mathematica frontends and a few pdf viewers (my typical load) makes
opening another terminal take as long as 5 seconds. if gnome-shell is
targeted at undemanding casual users with widows like customs of having
one, two windows open, then this is fine. but gnome2 had no such issues,
even with compiz running...
