Clean install of Ubuntu 10.04
Set panel to autohide and various apps to start on boot in 'Startup
Applications'.
On login apps open maximised, moving the mouse over where the panel is and it
doesn't show (or shows underneath apps) Minimise/un-maximise apps, click on the

The way I would see the interface behaving (to mimick a hardware player)
is as follows;
View > Show Subtitles = Unchecked
mplayer dvd:// -slang en -showforcedsubsonly
View > Show Subtitles = Checked

Just to clarify, this is an issue with mplayer itself that obviously
affects gnome-mplayer.

It is possible to get passthrough working, in Karmic if I want to use
passthrough I have to go into the audio applet and set the Profile to
'Analog Stereo Output' (I'm guessing this forces pulse to release it's
lock on the digital output) and then adjust the options for whatever
mediaplayer to use
my.cnf is part of the mysql-common package, not the server one. Not sure
how I ended up losing mine.

But it never becomes available no matter how long you leave it. If you
press play though it'll stay suspended for a few seconds and then carry
on.
Why would it struggle to step through 1 frame at a time when it can
playback perfectly fine at the full 60fps?

maybe 30 presses and then stops functioning until you hit play again.
