ok. I'm very sorry and this is embarrassing. Apparently I used the volume buttons on the keyboard to turn the sound down. I do not know why this doesn't transpose to the volume manager, nor why pcm is gone in alsamixer. Discovered the problem after re-installing alpha6 and the problem remained.
