I had the same problem, It happens from the 169.07 nvidia drivers and
newer. I have the same problem also in debian, but semi-solved it using
the drivers 169.04 (beta). I'm not sure if they work with the newer X
server in Ubuntu.

Sound broke in my pc when I upgraded from kernel 2.6.24-11 to 2.6.24-12.
And the problem exists in both -generic and -i386. I have an onboard
soundcard (It's a nforce2 motherboard and it uses the ac97 sound
module). I have seen that I can't load now the module "soundcore", it
existed in 2.6.24-11 b

I fixed this by adding the hostname in /etc/hosts beacuse it was
missing. In the hosts file there was a line that showed:
127.0.1.1 hostname:DOMAIN hostname:DOMAIN
so I modified that line so that it reads:
127.0.1.1 hostname:DOMAIN hostname:DOMAIN hostname
where "hostname" is my computer's name

I tried the latest nvidia drivers (169.07) on Ubuntu Gutsy and this bug
is not present anymore. I mean, this bug has evolved (as the black
window bug did?). Now if there are many windows open (so the video
memory is full), videos won't start playing at all, I've tested vlc,
