I don't have an "aticontrol" executable, but "aticonfig" is supposed to
create the relevant x.org entries with the --initial flag. When I run
"aticonfig --initial" I get the following:
$ sudo aticonfig --initial
Found fglrx primary device section
Unable to find any supported Screen sections
$ su

Found the problem: PCM mixer slider was set to 0%. Turned that up and
now flash videos have sound. Hope this helps somebody.

The majority of fonts affected in OOo come from msttcorefonts. Removing
that package and my fonts.cache and fonts.conf files makes fonts render
the same weird way in Firefox. Reinstalling msttcorefonts solves the
Firefox problem but Arial etc. once again render as in the screenshot
above in OOo.

Open "gconf-editor" and find the key I mentioned above. I set it to
"autovideosink" (one of the possible video sinks available) and
afterwards gstreamer-properties opens up again and you can choose a
different sink. Hope this helps!

I have the same problem on my X60. I've noticed that if I change the
brightness level in the preferences and then close the preferences
dialog, the brightness indicator goes away too.

ThinkPad X60 with intel chipset here. NetworkManager can't connect to
the wireless network either for me. But it's all set up so I just need
to run
sudo dhclient eth1
in the terminal and I get an IP address and am good to go.

I installed gstreamer0.10-gl attempting to fix my video playback (as
suggested in bug #98711). Selecting the custom "glimagesink" video
output did not work, however (not found).
At any rate, I uninstalled the gstreamer0.10-gl package and n
fixed the sound problem on my X60 by reenabling the modem in the BIOS.

Having the same problem on my X60 ... hitting Ctrl-Alt-Delete when this
happens though will skip the long wait and continue the boot-up process
(it's annoying having to intervene like this though).

I have a similar problem running any of the Feisty releases (up to and
including herd5). My laptop is an IBM X30 with a Linksys WPC11 v3 PCMCIA
wireless card. The system hangs at boot for "configuring network
interfaces" for the live CD and the installed system. Removing the card
solves the problem
The above four logs were taken from the System Log monitor and represent
what was logged before two freezes, one at 10:18, the other at 10:22.
