It seems it was operator malfunction all along. I don't understand how
it happened, but the touchpad was switched off. I'm certain i tried
turning it on earlier on in the testing process and it didn't work.
However, i obviously missed something.

Yeah, i can do that. But before i do it, i'll try and backtrack a bit
first and find the kernel version that it did work in. I originally
installed Fedora on it and the touchpad worked until i did an upgrade.
It's very likely that it would also work in an earlier version of
Ubuntu, but the easiest

I've just installed Ubuntu 12 beta 2 and the touchpad doesn't work on
this netbook.
I'm pretty sure it's a kernel issue as it doesn't work with the latest
kernels in Fedora either.

Synaptic crashes with "Aborted (core dumped)". However, apt-get update /
apt-get upgrade works and upgrades packages ok.
Crash reports fail mostly, too - inviting me to submit a crash report on
the crash reporter crashing (which, naturally, also
synaptic-strace2.txt is the last part of the screen output from running
'strace synaptic > synaptic-strace1.txt 2>&1'
