I'm having a similar - probably the same - problem. Synaptic crashes with "Aborted (core dumped)". However, apt-get update / apt-get upgrade works and upgrades packages ok.
Crash reports fail mostly, too - inviting me to submit a crash report on the crash reporter crashing (which, naturally, also crashes).
