I have the same problem on IBM Thinkpad T42p. The Laptop has both, Trackpoint
and Touchpad. In xorg.conf the synaptics driver is pointed to the "event"
device of the touchpad. However no mouse (trackpoint, touchpad and even USB
mouse) works with
